Calling all K-pop fans to Gather the Misfits Café
Discover and explore this hidden gem together with MARISSA ARIELLA.
Hidden along the streets of Rangoon Road sits the Gather the Misfits (GTM) café situated in a row of shophouses.
Established in 2019 by a group of coffee drinkers, the owners wanted to make everyone, no matter the background, feel welcome. This explains the name, says Jared Tan, 33, a café admin at GTM.
Over time, this led GTM to become one of the many cafés utilised by K-pop fans to host cupsleeve events.
As a K-pop fan, I’ve visited other cafés that hosted cupsleeve events and wanted to know what makes GTM stand out from the rest.
“The café hosted 67 events in 2021 and 45 in 2020,” says Mr Tan. “Currently, the café is booked every weekend, for a good reason”.

“The venue rental fee is free for a weekday and $25 for a weekend,” says Ardelia Cahaya, 18. She collaborated with GTM in September 2021 and is planning another event happening at GTM in February 2022.
When choosing a venue for her event, Ardelia says she attempted to contact +82’s management but to no avail. On the other hand, GTM’s management gave prompt replies and was “kind and informative”.
Fans typically spend about $100 on decorations, venue and printing of the cupsleeves and freebies. Thus, a cheaper venue allows them to splurge more on decorations and printing.
I attended a Day6 event called Remember Us on Dec 27, 2021.
The location of the café is quite obscure, so it was a relatively long walk from Farrer Park MRT station, and the route lacked shelter. It took about 15 minutes to get there because I lost my way.
“If we were at a better location, we would definitely be attracting more customers. However, for customers to want to book your space, you would have to provide something special, and that is our service,” Mr Tan says.
“It’s not as convenient as other cafés that are within the mall and more known to the public. I think this place is more unique, the experience is better here compared to when we hosted the events at Coffeesmith because of the ambience and all that and it’s quite quiet, it’s not in the middle of a mall so I think that’s one of the main reasons why I chose this café,” Jacyntha Tan, 25, one of the organisers of the Remember Us cupsleeve event, says.
I was impressed at the size and spaciousness of the café. The interior of the café had a Korean-like aesthetic and a projector room. The comfortable ambience gave a very cosy and homey feel.
“Out of all the cafés that allow café events, I feel like they utilised their space the best. There are many tables, but the café still looks very spacious. I took the opportunity to use the projector to project videos of the K-pop idols, which was a first in Singapore,” says Ardelia.

To further enhance the event’s appeal, GTM provides custom menus like latte art, macarons, and cookies to compliment the event’s theme and the limited availability of the customisation will attract visitors to the café.
During my visit, the hospitality of the staff was commendable as they greeted me when I came into the café, and they provided table service. They also came to my table to check if everything was okay which I found very thoughtful.
Miss Ow and Miss Tan were permitted to enter GTM one and a half hours earlier to prepare and overran slightly after the café’s opening hours but “the staff didn’t rush or hurry [them] to finish”.
“I like the flexibility; I feel like the staff gave us a lot of freedom in decorating the space. They didn’t restrict us on where we can put the decorations and they even provided us with stuff like frames to put up pictures on the wall,” Vivian Ow, 24, the other organiser of Remember Us cupsleeve event, says.
Ardelia, Miss Tan and Miss Ow would recommend GTM to those looking to host a cupsleeve event.
As both a customer and K-pop fan, I’d recommend GTM to others, be it for events or leisure because the café’s space doesn’t impede creativity and the atmosphere is calming and relaxing.
